Day 1 Highlights from the Sunset Beach Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 February, 2014 -- Today marked the start of the men's competition at world-famous Sunset Beach on the North Shore in Hawaii.

Early in the morning the call to run the contest was delayed due to small conditions.  At roughly 10AM that situation changed as the swell increased and provided a plethora of classic sunset rides.

The sets came in at three to five-foot hawaiian (7-10' faces), allowing for clean conditions that only got better throughout the day.

34 men battled it out throughout the day in four or five-man heats, with the top two from each heat advancing on to the next round.

The top eight men at the end of the day advanced to the main event draw which will be held over two days in the week to come.

The top 8 finishers earned who earned a spot in the main event draw, with their 2nd round scores:

BERND ROEDIGGER (HI) 12.17

JAMES CASEY (USA) 10.47

MONNIER MANUTEA 10.33

TOBY CRACKNELL (USA) 9.93

FISHER GRANT (USA) 9.56

KAINOA TEXIERA (BRA) 9.3

KIERAN GRANT 8.26

ANTHONY VELA (USA) 6.87

A final draw will be available on our website as soon as possible.

Next Up - Morning Call @ 7AM HST

We will decide tomorrow morning whether to run the Sunset Beach Pro, the Turtle Bay Women's Pro, or have a lei day to wait for better conditions.  Stay tuned on our website or facebook page tomorrow, February 10 for the final call!
