Rippable conditions on tap for Caribbean's top surfers
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 February, 2014 -- Fantastic conditions were on offer for opening day of the NSSA's newly established Caribbean Conference. Reeling chest high waves delivered fun, rippable conditions at South Point, Christ Church, Barbados for the Caribbean's top surfers.
The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) in partnership with the Barbados Junior Surfing Club launched its NSSA Caribbean Conference he first event being held at South Point, Christ Church, Barbados on February 2nd 2014. Barbados‚ top junior surfers were present for the great conditions and reeling chest high waves at the famous left break.
All very stoked on vying for coveted spots in the NSSA's East Coast Regional Championships to be held in New Smyrna Beach on 3rd-6th April and ultimately the National Finals in California June 26th-July 3rd 2014.
Conference Director, Alan Burke, opened the inaugural event welcoming the competitors and noting that the NSSA and BJSC see this Conference as a catalyst for the development of junior surfing in the Caribbean. The future is bright with many Caribbean surfers being recognized and progressing through the ranks on the international stage.
Barbados‚ own Chelsea Tuach recently won the 2013 ASP North America Pro Junior Girls series, and Josh Burke returned for the event after a fantastic tour of Hawaii and a 17th place finish at the ASP North Shore Surf Shop Pro Junior in 15-20ft pounding Sunset Beach, the largest waves ever for a Junior surfing event.
The NSSA Caribbean Conference is seen as an avenue for many of the region‚s top junior surfers to develop alongside the best US juniors and stake their claim in the international world of surfing.
The event opened with the Open Mens division which ultimately will be claimed by Josh Burke with a narrow victory over second placed Dane Mackie.
Josh would display his powerful above the lip repertoire on both the lefts and the rights. Dane would answer and landed an aggressive backside air into the flats.
Evan Moll intimately familiar with the South Point lefts would place third picking some of the nice outside waves and throwing buckets. Finishing fourth was another goofy footer Zander Venezia who surfed smart and aggressive all day securing every division final that he surfed.
The Opens Womens was contested by Chelsea Roett and upcoming grom and youngest member of the Barbados National Team for 2014 Gabrielle Gittens.
Chelsea would take the victory at the final horn over her younger counterpart. Chelsea mentored Gabriella showing her great vertical technique. Gabriella has developed great flow and is poised to take the surfing world by storm.
In the Open Juniors (15& Under) the victory was taken by Jacob Burke who smoked every wave to shore with his powerful backside approach, sniffing out some of the best barrels when on offer.
Zander Venezia would edge Andrew Rose for second and third respectively with the fourth place taken by Evan Moll.
The Open Boys 12& Under was won by Zander Venezia over second place Caleb Rapson and Darrian Pitcher third. Both Caleb and Darrian are the next wave of Barbados‚ juniors looking up to the older groms and taking the level up to the notch.
Finally the Airshow entered the water with one sought after „bird trophy‰ up for grabs. Josh Burke would stake his claim early with a sick frontside 180 air reverse. Dane Mackie and Andrew Rose would challenge with air reverses of their own.
But Josh would pick a great lined up right and launch a huge inverted air reverse to blow the field with a solid lead and take home the first bird trophy of the NSSA season. We are sure to see more progressive action as we head into the next events.
The inaugural event is in the books and the juniors now prepare for event 2 to be held at Long Beach this coming weekend.
