Where will Australia put those new smart barriers? And when?

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 December, 2015 - New South Wales will run a new shark barrier at Ballina around Lighthouse Beach and Lennox Head Beach this January.

There had been objections from the community when it was learned the new nets would be temporary. But according to local government, the new technology needs to be tested before being deployed permanently.

NSW Premier Mike Baird and Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair have visited the area to inspect the shark deterrent technology according to an article at

Mr Baird said if the smart drum lines were successful they would be deployed permanently off the north coast.

"They'll start to go into the water in January and obviously there is a lot of confidence that they can work," he told ABC. "We'll fast-track construction to ensure they're in place as soon as possible.”

Mr Baird said the trials were part of the government’s $16million shark strategy budget which aims to finding long-term solutions to Australia’s shark issues.
