Number Crunching: Five vie for the title

ASP Updates

Hey Rainman, ASP title numbers, possibilities here now

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 October, 2013 : - - ASP World Tour Manager Renato Hickel clued us in on the world title scenarios going into the Moche Rip Curl Pro Peniche. The below title scenarios got a little more interesting today when both Kelly and Mick suffered Round 1 losses and will have to win their Round 2 heats to advance.

Ratings points after the Quiksilver Pro France
Mick Fanning (AUS) 51900
Kelly Slater (USA) 45900
Jordy Smith (ZAF) 39700
Taj Burrow (AUS) 39400
Joel Parkinson (AUS) 38950

Going into Portugal there are 5 World Title Contenders for the Men’s WCT Title: Fanning, Slater, Smith, Burrow and Parkinson. Only Mick Fanning can clinch the 2013 WCT title in Portugal. Here are the scenarios:
If Mick Fanning gets a 1st:
-          Kelly will need a 3rd or better to take the title decision to Hawaii;
-          Jordy, Taj and Joel will be out of the race;
If Mick gets a 2nd:
-          Kelly will need a 9th;
-          Jordy  will need a 1st; Taj and Joel will be out of the race;
If Mick gets a 3rd:
-          Kelly will need a 9th;
-          Jordy, Taj and Joel will need a 1st;
If Mick gets a 5th or worse:
-          World Title decision will go to Hawaii as even with a 25th in Portugal Kelly can still win in Hawaii;
-          Taj will need a win to keep his World Title hopes alive for Hawaii;
-          Jordy and Joel will need a 2nd;
