New York hero-surfer could be memorialized
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 June, 2014 - Hero lifeguard Dylan Smith, who helped rescue six people from the fires and raging waters of Hurricane Sandy in Rockaway, will hopefully be memorialized with a street renaming at the corner of Beach 130th Street and Newport Ave.
He and Belle Harbor resident Michael McDonnell used rope and his surfboard to help six neighbors escape fire and rising floodwaters on Beach 130th St.
Smith died two months after the storm during a surfing accident in Puerto Rico. Community Board 14 is set to consider a proposal to name the corner of Beach 130th and Newport Ave. as “Dylan Smith Way” at its meeting on June 10.
