Quarter Finalists Decided at Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 July, 2010 : - - San Sebastian, Basque Country/Spain – The last 16 men and women athletes for the Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian were decided during another exciting day of competition at the main beach break of La Zurriola. The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-1 sanctioned event saw Europe’s best male and female surfers come together to do battle for the honour of claiming the Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian 2010 title

Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) led the charge into the quarter-finals ahead of a strong field with a scintillating performance in both his twenty-minute heats. Looking fresh and relaxed the young Portuguese come to the forefront in his fourth round clash waiting until the half-way mark to open his account with a combination of forehand turns followed late in the heat with another long right-hander to claim the highest combined heat total of 15.83 out of a possible 20 the highest so far in the event.

Having finished 13th here last year and looking to better that result expectations have grown after an earlier performance by Ribeiro yielded the highest single score of 9.10 out of 10 to show that his recent overseas training session in preparation for the current ASP European Pro Junior Series is paying benefits and has placed him as one of the favourites to battle it out for this year’s title.

“I am really happy with the way things are going today as I was in South Africa two weeks ago training for the pro juniors this year and now I have to really good boards at the moment so I am feeling good. I saw that there was a good right hander down the beach a little on that peak so I just tried to find the right spot and it was ok and then at the end I got another right and it was so much fun out there now.”

“I really like coming to San Sebastian and all the pro juniors especially in Spain because it is so much fun with all my friends here and so many people down here at the beach. I think it is going to be a bit smaller tomorrow but it is the same for everyone so I will try to do my best and see what happens”

Medi Vemenardi (REU) equalled his performance last year by making it through to the quarter-finals for the second year in-a-row in a heat which saw the lead change several times before Vemenardi came out on top with his last throw of the dice in the dying moments of the heat.

Feeling a little uncomfortable with both the constantly changing conditions and his choice of board Vemenardi wasted no time post heat to fine turn both himself and his equipment for tomorrow’s upcoming clashes.

“There are a lot of options to choose from out there with the inside wave and the outside wave so you have to stay about twenty minutes before your heat checking out where you should go and I wasn’t really sure so I went outside and got one wave and then in the end came on the inside with the other guys and got that last one. It was definitely really hard out there that heat.”

“The waves are changing so quickly with the tide and the wind and every 10 minutes you have new options and it is the first time we have these types of conditions at this contest with 4ft waves so it is different for me. I still have to try some new boards because I have so many boards that I don’t know which one to take and the one I used in my heat was not the board I want to use tomorrow so I am going to go back into the water and test some other boards and get ready for the quarters.”

Alex Gironi (Sopelana/EUK) 18, obtained his best result in three years on the ASP Europe Pro Junior Tour with his low scoring win late this afternoon to be the first Basque surfer along with Pedro Berasaluce and Ander Mendiguren to make it through to the final 16 men. Totally overjoyed with today’s results Gironi will be out to do his best in the first quarter-final battle.

“This is the best result in all my life here today at an ASP Pro Junior event. I knew that I had to take the biggest waves in my heat and I caught some good ones but I didn’t feel that I surfed very well in that heat but I am feeling confident for my next heat and my boards are really good so I am happy and this is a great result for me.”

Earlier today saw the Oakley Girls Pro Junior San Sebastian get underway with all the top-seeds advancing without difficulty through to the quarter-finals. Current ASP Europe Women’s Junior Champion Joanne Defay (FRA) along with Pauline Ado (FRA), Alizee Arnaud (FRA) and Cannelle Bulard (REU) gave flawless displays in their respective first round clashes to remain firm favourites to take out this year’s title.

Alizee Arnaud (Hossegor/FRA) 20, cruised through her round one heat starting off with a series of backhand turns to score an opening ride of 8.00 out of a possible 10 to secure the highest single score of the Oakley Girls Pro Junior San Sebastian. Finishing third in last year’s edition and currently sitting in third position on the European Junior rankings Arnaud surfed with flow and power on her way to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

“I was lucky because it was one of the bigger waves of the day and it had a lot of power and I could do two big turns on my back-hand and I have been at home training and surfing a lot getting ready for this event which would be great to win because I came third here last year and I want to at least get to the final.”

Second on the 2010 ASP Europe Women’s Junior ratings Cannelle Bulard (REU) 16, secured her pass into the final 16 competitors in this morning’s opening heat with a 7.67 and a solid backup wave to obtain a combined heat total of 13.84 out of 20. Having recently finished her final school exams Bulard was able to compete without the added pressure of her schooling weighing on her mind and her performance demonstrated that she wants to make the Oakley Girls Pro Junior San Sebastian her second win in this year’s junior series having won the inaugural Breti Girls Pro Junior last April.

“The right is very good today so I am happy because the waves like this I feel comfortable here with my surfing. I have just finished all my exams so I am totally relaxed now and feel confident at this contest. I have been spending all my time preparing for my exams first and then a little bit of training with my father.”

When competition resumes tomorrow with the first-call at 7:30am (local time) quarter-finals will kick-off the action with a possible crowning of 2010 Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian Champions.

There are four events on this year's ASP European Men's Junior Tour which will eventually crown the prestigious ASP European Junior Championship as well as qualifying for the ASP World Junior Tour. Year-end ratings' Top 4 securing their place in the two ASP Wold Junior title decider events in Bali and Australia.

First of two ASP Europe Sanctioned Pro Junior events taking place in Euskadi (Basque Country), the Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian will also be a crucial event for surfers bidding for the 1000 Euro extra-prizemoney offered by Surfing Euskadi to the best male and female performer over the two events of San Sebastian and Sopelana.
