Amazing surf dished out as Kelly and Parko trade tension and tubes
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 March, 2013 : - - Hi from Kirra, The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast has finally been put to bed with Kelly Slater taking out the two hometown heroes in back to back heats to extend his amazing record of wins in World Tour events. First up today Slater knocked out Mick Fanning in a see saw semi final battle then destroyed any chances of the the 2012 World Champ, Joel Parkinson, having a dream start to the 2013 season.
Parkinson began his day with a perfect 10 point double barrel on the very first wave of the semi final against Michel Bourez. Local knowledge played a big part in the their semi final with Michel out of position for most of the heat. When he finally pulled into a Kirra special he showed the huge crowd he knew exactly how to barrel ride.
In fickle but barreling Kirra Slater played his own game against Mick Fanning in the second semi and it looked at one stage as though we could have been treated to a Parko vs Fanning final. Kelly found his rhythm and a couple of drainers towards the end of the heat to knock out Fanning and to set up the match up that didn’t happen at Pipe last year. A Parkinson vs Slater head to head heat.
The wind was swirling around and with rain squalls blowing off the ocean when the 40 minute final kicked off. The two combatants prowled the line up looking for any advantage. At times one or the other was half way down Kirra point or trying to snag a long one from up near Big Gryone.
Slater made the most of his waves and used priority well forcing Parko off a barreling drainer which had the potential to turn the final. The win for Slater capped off a very special day for him if the social media buzz is to be believed. It’s being reported that he has proposed to his longtime girlfriend Kalani Miller and the pair are going to be parents sometime late this year.
It’s along time to the end of the year but there is already talk of a twelfth world title in Kelly’s sights but if this comp is anything to go by Parko, Fanning, Taj Burrow and Julian Wilson are not going to let Kelly get everything his own way. Next stop is Margaret River for the Prime Telstra Drug Aware Pro and then onto the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach over the Easter weekend. It’s going to be a busy few weeks for everyone involved.
