Tradies Surfmasters wraps up in tricky surf at North Cronulla

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 November, 2013 - Cronulla - The second and final day of the 2013 Tradies Surfmasters kicked off at North Cronulla today with a variety of different disciplines all tearing into the wild and woolly three-to-four foot waves.

Bonny Hills surfer George Watt made his voyage to Sydney worthwhile, successfully taking out the Over-60 Longboard Final. The natural-footer preformed an eclectic mix of turns and nose rides to snatch the victory from Barry Marshall, John Mandybur, Brian Bull and Paul Lalor.

“It was a lot of fun out there and a real workout,” said Watt. “It was great to come down from up the coast and surf in the city again, it’s been a few years since I surfed in Sydney last. Mainly, I just enjoy competing in divisions like this as it’s an incentive to catch up with old friends and to stay fit also.”

North Nowra’s Mick Craze made light work of the challenging conditions successfully locking in a 6.33 ride (out of a possible ten) and a 7.00 ride to snatch the win in the Over-40s Longboard Final.

In a man-on-man Over-40s SUP final, both John Clingan and Tony Boyd exchanged several tricky waves over the course of the 20-minute heat. However, Boyd’s ability to lock in several lengthy righthanders proved to be the determining factor and Clingan had to settle for second place.

Grant Dennis successfully took down an elite final pack to be crowned Kneeboard champion. The Maroubra kneeboarder threw down a chain of critical manoeuvres to lock in a heat total of 9.54. Russell Smith, Craig Tinsley and Chris Swinbanks finished the final in second, third and fourth respectively.

Local surfer Paul Detmold continued to build on the form he showed in the earlier rounds when he attacked the final of the Over-45 Longboard. The powerful goofy-footer threw down a series of forehand wraps to be awarded with an impressive 8.1 single wave score. Despite a stellar performance, Over-40 Longboard champion Mick Craze had to settle for second position.

After wowing the judges in the earlier rounds, Rob Smith went on to lock in a win in the Over-50 Men Longboard final.

2013 Australian Over-55 Longboard Champion, John Skinner added another award to his mantelpiece, successfully claiming dual Over-55 Longboard finals. The Warilla surfer locked in multiple high-scoring waves to claim his latest accomplishment. Local surfer Jon Lavers claimed the runner-up position while Wayne Mcaree took third.

On land, the Red, White and Blues Festival saw food and wine stalls, nostalgic cars, swimwear parades and live music stages fill Dunningham Park, directly behind the competition area. The family friendly festival will carry into tomorrow and is thanks to Jumbo events.
