Rare conditions combine for amazing monster session on Maui
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 January, 2016 - A massive swell has has swept through the Hawaiian Islands with outer-island big wave focal point Pe’ahi on Maui seeing a rare low-wind paddle day. Standouts like Shane Dorian pushed the envelope as they have been doing each session this year.
But it was Aaron Gold who dropped into the biggest paddle wave anyone can remember.
The low-key big wave maestro tells his story from the airport (he’s on his way to Todos Santos for the WSL event).
Gold said he’s thankful that he didn’t get hurt and that he’s alright.
“I still wanna ride the biggest wave in the world,” said Gold. “I don’t think that’s it by far yet. I really feel there’s another level.”
The massive El Niño generated swell is now headed straight for the West Coast, where a collection of the world's best big wave riders are prepping for Sunday's Todos Santos Challenge.
