Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 June, 2013 : - - Salamat Pagi or Good Morning from Bali, The reigning world champ Joel Parkinson was carried to the winners podium in a ceremonial chair by Ubud locals dressed in traditional Balinese costume after taking out the inaugural Oakley Pro Bali at Keramas on the east coast of Bali.
Parko came up against 'The Spartan', Tahitian Michel Bourez who was surfing in his first ever World Championship final in solid six foot Keramas. Bourez was on top for most of the what but Parko came back with the winning score on his last wave.
The last two days of the contest saw some amazing surfing. Parko scored the perfect heat score of 20 points while Josh Kerr scored a perfect 10 point wave, three 9's and an 8 in one heat to defeat Kelly Slater and John John Florence in a Round 4 heat.
The results of this Bali contest will have huge ramifications on this year's World Title race. Kelly Slater was leading the ratings after Fiji finished with an equal 9th. Jordy Smith dropped down the ratings with an equal 13th place along with former front runner, Adriano de Souza, who also scored an =9th and dropped to #7.
Despite Oakley having run world junior events here in Bali for a number of years, there appeared to be a lot of 'behind the scenes' teething problems associated with running their first WCT tour event. This contest will be remembered for the quality of the waves and the incredible level of high performance surfing from the top 34 who made the most of the Keramas Backdoor style barrels and ramps for above the lip aerials.
