George Karbus & Pablo Jimenez talk about two stellar images
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 March, 2016 - World renown action and adventure sports photography contest, the Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2016, will close the door for entries soon. Photographers have until March 31, 2016 to submit their shots for a chance to be part of this prestigious photography contest and put their names on the map.
Two previous entrants are George Karbus of Ireland and Pablo Jimenez of Chile.
George Karbus is a wildlife, water and landscape photographer based on the west coast of Ireland. I'm focused on wild marine mammals, the ocean, waves, surf photography and beautifully lit coastal sceneries.
"I'm focused on wild marine mammals, the ocean, waves, surf photography and beautifully lit coastal sceneries,” says Karbus. “I try to capture the beauty of nature in its purest aspects. All my underwater images are taken during freediving in natural light in order to make them look as realistic as possible.”
“This photograph was taken on the west coast of Ireland at the most intimidating surf spot called “Rileys”. I dove beneath the water with my diving mask, held my breath, and waited for the moment when local surfer Tom Lowe would pass with a powerful snap close enough to my lens. Water visibility is always very limited in Ireland, and I was lucky to get a clear shot like this.”
Another entrant from the last event is Pablo Jiménez of Chile.
“I received a call from Cristian Merello telling me that the sand bar at Punta the Lobos in Pichilemu was like never before, creating really long perfect barreling waves,” recalls Pablo about this image. “I got all my gear set up and drove down there to find this perfect point break with perfect round barrels that went for about one hundred meters.”
“On this particular day I had mentioned to Cristian that I was trying to get a shot from inside the barrel looking out. The morning was really cold cloudy and dark. After a good while of missing out on waves because of the current, I started to get frustrated, almost thinking about going in, when all of the sudden this little nugget came through and I was in the perfect spot as Cristian passed by “Did I get it?” I thought. I could not see the photo since my water housing does not have a review button.
When we finally got back home I managed to open the water housing and check the morning session photos. I was really happy with what I saw.”
