Bonny Hills delivers for NRMA NSW Junior State Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 July, 2014 - Rainbow Beach, Bonny HIlls - Surfers in the Under-18 and Under-16 Boys saw another day of near perfect two-to-three foot waves for the third day of the National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) NSW Junior State Titles at Bonny Hills today.

The NRMA NSW Junior State Titles  - which sees over 350 participants - will determine the NSW team for the upcoming Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Yallingup, Western Australia in December.

Sandon Whittaker (Avoca) wasted little time in making his mark on the Under-16 Boys division. The Central Coast goofy-footer managed to perform several critical forehand and backhand hooks to be rewarded with the highest heat total of the event - 18.57 (out of a possible 20 points). As a result Whittaker left his closest competitor chasing a combination of scores to knock him from the top spot.

Other Under-16 heat winners who left their fellow surfers chasing a combination of scores to take the lead included: Max Mcguigan (Chifley) who posted a 17.7 heat total; Samson Coulter (Balgowlah) who posted a 15.5 heat total; Luke Wrice (Coledale) who posted a 15.67 heat total and Joel Paxton (Ewingsdale) who posted a 17.5 heat total.

All surfers have cemented their position in round two of the NRMA NSW Junior State Titles.

Fraser Dovell (Avalon) showed why he is the reigning Australian Junior Champion, performing a chain of lightening fast carves to nab himself a win in the Under-18 Boys. The Northern Beaches natural-footer notched up several impressive scores over the course of the 20-minute heat, however it was his 9.33 wave score (out of a possible ten points) and his 7.67 wave score, which formed his impressive score line.

Not to be outdone in the same division, 2013 Under-16 NSW Champion Harley Ross-Webster (Curl Curl) managed to jag an 8.83, which gave him the edge against his opponents in his round one heat. As a result, Harley booked his spot into round two.

Other Under-18 heat winners who locked in heat totals in excess of 14 points included: Jeames Young (Yamba), Kalani Ball (Stanwell Park), Jared Hickel (Cronulla), Kipp Caddy (Cronulla), Monty Tait (Maroubra) and Chris Zaffis (Angourie).

Competition will recommence tomorrow at 7:30am with the call for the days schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am. The event hotline is 0458 247 212.

All qualifiers for the NRMA NSW Junior State Titles were determined by ten individual regional titles, which took place up and down the NSW coastline earlier in the year.

The NRMA NSW Schools Titles occupied the first two days of the event. The NRMA NSW State Junior Titles can run anywhere between North Haven and North Wall at Port Macquarie.
