Event will resume on Saturday when a new swell arrives

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 May, 2014 - A small swell and strong onshore winds at Itauna Beach have forced officials to call a lay day at the 2014 ASP Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Powerade. Following three complete days of competition, the event will resume on Saturday when a new swell arrives and the athletes will battle it out for U$ 250,000 in prize money and valuable 6,500 points towards the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) rankings.

Only the top 10 ranked surfers at the end of the year will qualify for the 2015 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour (WCT). Being the first Prime event of 2014, action has heated up in the race for qualification. Based on the current rankings, the top positions are held by Adriano de Souza (BRA), Matt Banting (AUS) and Tomas Hermes (BRA) respectively.

Showing signs of improvement, Keanu Asing (HAW), Alex Ribeiro (BRA) and Heitor Alves (BRA) have moved up several positions into the qualification zone. But results are still subject to change following the conclusion of the event with Ricardo Christie (NZL), Perth Standlick (AUS), Chris Ward (USA) and Gony Zubizarreta (ESP) close on their heels.

When competition resumes, local hero Raoni Monteiro (BRA) will face fellow WCT surfer Aritz Aranburu (ESP) in Heat 7 of Round 4. A call is made for 7:30 am (local time) at Itauna Beach for the 2014 ASP Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Powerade.

The 2014 ASP Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Powerade is brought to you by the Brazilian Association of Surfing Professionals (ABRASP) and sponsored by the State of Rio de Janeiro, the City of Saquarema, Powerade, Quiksilver, Peugeot and Barra GR Hygiene and Cleaning and is supported by CCR Via Lagos, the Rio de Janeiro Surf Federation (FESERJ) and the Saquarema Surf Association (ASS).
