Groms headed to Manu Bay for Backdoor GromBash

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 May, 2014 - New Zealand’s ultimate surfing destination of Raglan plays host to the final event of the season this weekend with the Backdoor GromBash taking place at Manu Bay on Saturday and Sunday (10th – 11th May).

The inaugural event in 2013 scored Raglan perfection and the opportunity to surf pumping point break waves again has enticed yet another jam packed draw of young surfers to head west this weekend.

Many of the entrants competed at the most recent event held at New Plymouth two weeks ago but it is the Under 20 Men’s Division that makes a return at the Backdoor GromBash and these guys and girls are looking forward to the pending match ups.

Piha surfer Tane Wallis leads the way for the boys with a massive points lead over his opponents.  Christchurch surfer Harrison Whiteside won the South Island Champs held over Easter but Wallis has such a colossal lead over his opponents that not even a win by his closest rival Whiteside would be enough for him to catch up.

Whiteside is closely followed by local surfer Ben Poulter who will relish the chance to surf at the break he has spent the most of his youth surfing.  Poulter has only ‘podiumed’ once this season with a third place so will want to improve on that come Sunday afternoon.

For the girls it is the Sansom twins from the North Shore of Auckland that lead the way in the Under 20 Girls Division.  A win by either of the two will have them return home at the top of the rankings.  Britt Kindred of Muriwai follows close behind ranked third overall.

Again it could be local surfers such as Raglan Surf Academy students Indica Ratima or Milly Crewe that comes through with a big result to scare the top ranked surfers.  Notably, goofy footed Ratima’s best result of the year came at the Rip Curl Pro held at Raglan in March.

By far the most popular divisions this weekend are those of the Under 17s and it is these divisions that are the most closely contested.  The top four or five surfers in each division can leap frog each other to the top of the rankings.  And with rankings leaders Daniel Farr (Tara) and Jasmine Smith (Gis) both competing overseas, a change up in the top five of both divisions is a certainty.

For the youngest of surfers in the Under 14 Divisions, the simple luxury of getting to surf Manu Bay with only four surfers out will be a joy in itself.  Often left at the bottom of the pecking order, these young surfers will have the wavescape of Manu Bay with only three other surfers in the water.

The peeling point break waves will allow the groms plenty of chance to experience just how good Raglan is.

Backdoor have upped the land based game this year too with even more skate park features for everyone to enjoy in between surfing their heats.

Action will take place from 8:00am – 5:00pm daily on Saturday and Sunday at Manu Bay, Raglan.
