Billabong Occy's Grom Comp
Gold Coast, Queensland Australia
26 - 29 June 2015
Start of day three filled with the junior girl divisions
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 June, 2015 - Gold Coast, Queensland - No amount of rain could deter hordes of frothing groms from competing in amazing Duranbah conditions at the 12th annual Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp, presented by Flight Centre.
The start of day three was filled with the junior girl divisions who had patiently waited through the opening days of competition to have their chance to battle it out against some of the best junior surfers their division has to offer.
Avoca Beach (NSW) girls Macy Callaghan and Kirra Belle Olsson wasted no time impressing the judges and wining their round 1 heat in the U/16 Girls and U/14 Girls respectively. Both girls will now move directly into the quarter finals that will be held in the coming days. Joining Callaghan in the U/16 Girls quarter final is Tweed Heads local Kobie Enright (NSW) who secured a needed score late in the heat boosting her into the finals program.
Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD) made light work of her round one heat after locking in a 7.33 (out of possible 10 points) in the opening minutes and leaving her fellow competitors to try and narrow down the lead.
Codie Jeffery (Newhaven, VIC) was the first to progress through to the next round of the U/12 Boys division after his round one heat win over tough competition. Jeffery who is the defending champion will have to be surfing at his best to clench victory again and etch him name on the prestigious Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp trophy for 2015.
To make sure that no grom had too much excess energy loads of games and challenges were held to crown our beach games champions. It was smiles all round with the winners pocketing awesome Billabong prize packs to go show off in front of their mates.
Flight Centre (P.A.C.E) Managing Director Darren Wright said, "Flight Centre are delighted to be involved with Billabong in supporting the "Billabong Occy's Grom Comp" and the various other events in Billabong's national junior series. Encouraging surfers of all ages to enjoy the ocean and supporting well run events that provide junior athletes the opportunity to showcase their talent are important parts of how our company can contribute to the community and drive tourism to and from Australia with the customers who will be exposed to these events. They are a fantastic way to showcase our amazing coastline and Australia's unique beach culture."
As added value the man himself Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo will select one lucky grom to partake in a ‘money can’t buy’ surf trip experience. The winner will be announced by Occy at the presentations on Thursday afternoon.
