WSA Midget Smith competitors frothed at San Clemente Pier

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 December, 2013 -- File this under good problems to have:  The Western Surfing Association Championship Tour Event at the San Clemente Pier last weekend went from sun up to sundown with double competition areas to accommodate a record 454 competitors.

The fun, fair, professionally run and family oriented surfing competitions that the WSA has been running since 1961 have really caught on over the last several years, upsetting the status quo and making the WSA, by far, the largest surfing organization on the west coast.

The weather was cold, rainy and windy on Saturday with marginal blown out conditions, but the surfers made the best of it, even making it look fun.  Sunday dawned bright and calm, but cold.  The surf picked up a couple of feet from the previous days wind and consistent chest high peaks rolled through on both sides of the pier.

This is the WSA’s Midget Smith Memorial Pier Rat Challenge, held annually in memory of a San Clemente surfboard shaper, pro surfer and contest judge who died of cancer in 2008. Midget grew up surfing at the San Clemente Pier. This was also our 6th Annual Toys For Tots event.  Our generous competitors contributed over 500 toys to the USMC representatives at the event.

At the close of competition the surfers below had made their way to the finals.  Some surfing through a field of 60 surfers to make their way to the top.  Next up is WSA Championship Tour Event #6 at Oceanside Harbor, South Jetty, January 4 & 5, 2014.
