Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 August, 2014 - Baia Formosa, Rio Grande do Norte - Local surfer Italo Ferreira (BRA) began his campaign by posting the day’s highest scores at the 2014 ASP Red Nose Pro Junior in Baia Formosa, located in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Waves in the 2-3 foot range (1 metre) were present as Ferreira earned a 9.5 (out of 10 points) on his best wave and a heat total of a 17.50 at the right-hand pointbreak to qualify directly into Round 2.
"It feels great to catch a couple of good waves and win my heat," stated Italo Ferreira. "I was a little anxious to get that first heat out of the way since I’m competing in front of my hometown crowd. I’d like to win the World Pro Junior title this year and it feels incredible to have all this support behind me."
Despite coming off a semifinals result at the Vans US Open of Surfing, current ASP South America Pro Junior champion and event top seed, Luan Wood (BRA) had a major upset and was eliminated in Heat 1 by Lucas Pires (BRA) and Gabriel Andre (BRA).
Young surfer Facundo Arreyes (ARG) currently resides in the state of Rio de Janeiro, but had no trouble acclimating to the waves at Pontal for the Red Nose Pro Junior in Baia Formosa.
"This is my first time surfing in this area and the only thing I knew was that Fabio Gouveia (former WCT surfer) and Italo Ferreira are from here," said Facundo Arreyes. "It looks a lot like Buzios, where I live, which is a small fishing town that’s very laid back. I was able to start the event off well with a victory and I need to keep doing my best because everyone here is so talented."
After completion of Heat 16 in the men’s division, the Red Nose Pro Junior wrapped up the day with the four preliminary heats of the women’s division. The top eight surfers qualified directly into the quarterfinal, including Miluska Tello (PER), who leads the race for the 2014 ASP South America Pro Junior title after her win in San Bartolo, Peru.
The 2014 ASP South America Red Nose Pro Junior event is presented by Red Nose and is approved by the ASP South America regional office as the second event in the ASP South America Pro Junior Series.
