2006 Rip Curl GromSearch – Event Four - Who’s Going to be the Champ!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 December, 2006 : - - The final event of the Rip Curl GromSearch for 2006 gets underway tomorrow (Saturday) with final ranking points on the line as well as the prestigious finals berths for the winners of the under 16 boys and girls divisions.  Swell predictions look promising to provide the perfect setting for the final event with a good swell forecast to hit the coast along with favourable southerly winds.

Paco Divers (Sandy Bay) is currently ranked second behind Matt Hewitt (Mnt) and the two surfers will have a full battle on their hands to win the Rip Curl GromSearch title.  If Hewitt places higher than Divers then he wins the series.  However, if Divers finishes in the top three and places higher than Hewitt, he can take the title.

Mathematically the top six surfers on the ratings can win the series with the third placed surfer Sean Peggs (Tairua) having the best chance of making it happen even though Hewitt and Divers would need to place lower than 7th equal.

In the Under 16 girls the battle is also tight.  Auckland surfers Rosa Thompson and Alexis Poulter lead the ratings with a good points lead over the remainder of the field.  Again second placed surfer Poulter needs to place higher than Thompson to jump into the lead.  This battle will be spiced up by the fact that local surfer Paige Hareb and Grace Spiers (WGM) make a return to the series after both having competed in only one event this year.

Paco Divers, the absent Ryan Hawker (Piha) and Matt Hewitt have all secured berths into the Rip Curl GromSearch final.  The winner of the final event this weekend will join them and should either Divers or Hewitt finish atop the field then the spot will go to the next placed surfer at this event.  In the girls Hareb, Poulter and Annie Stuart (Auck) have all secured spots with one berth remaining.

As well as the premier under 16 divisions there are the Under 14 and Under 12 divisions that have all received a high number of entries.  Karne Pitcher (WGM) has an unassailable lead in the Under 14 boys as does Rosa Thompson in the girls.  The Under 12s are a little closer with a number of surfers able to take out the top spot.
