Top groms kick off series of five events in search of national title

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 September, 2014 - This weekend, Jan Juc will hold the opening round of the internationally acclaimed Rip Curl GromSearch series seeing the best Under 16 surfers in the country converge on the popular beach break. The five-event series starts at Jan Juc beach in VIC, moves through NSW, WA and South Australia before running the last event on the Sunshine Coast, QLD in December.

Leaders on the National Ratings will then qualify for the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, to be held at North Narrabeen on January 12-14, 2015. Since its inception as a one day event in Victoria in 1999, the GromSearch series has developed into the strongest international series of events for 16 year and under surfers around the world. With parallel Rip Curl GromSearch series in over 10 countries, it has become a crucial stepping stone in the development of junior surfers.

The series allows surfers from throughout Australia to compete against their contemporaries and compare their results in a fun and engaging environment. The list of previous GromSearch competitors also illustrates that those surfers progressing to the finals are on the right track with current ASP World Tour competitors Owen Wright, Tyler Wright, Jordy Smith, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and current ASP World No.1 Gabriel Medina all coming through the GromSearch series.

Surfing Victoria CEO, Max Wells, has watched the events grow from their inception 15 years ago.

“The Rip Curl GromSearch has been an integral part of the Junior Development pathway in Australia for many years and provides our Victoria’s junior surfers with an event to showcase their talents to the rest of the country”

“There has been plenty of success for Victorian’s at past Rip Curl GromSearch events with Nikki Van Dijk taking out the National final in 2010 and Tully Wylie placing 2nd in the country last year”

“It’s always good to see the best in the country battle it out against our best.”

Working in conjunction with Surfing Australia, the Rip Curl GromSearch includes boys’ and girls’ divisions in 16 and under, 14 and under, and 12 and under. The series includes a National Ratings system, which will be used to qualify surfers for the National Final at North Narrabeen.

The 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch Series is presented by POSCA (Mitsubishi Pencil Australia) with managing partner Surfing Australia and associate partner FireWire Surfboards.
