Rip Curl's Mick Fanning Wins Billabong Pro Tahiti, Strengthens Lead as Current World #1
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2012 : - - Rip Curl's Mick Fanning has been crowned champion of the 2012 Billabong Pro Tahiti by defeating friend Joel "Parko" Parkinson in epic double-overhead conditions at Teahupo'o. Fanning, who went into this event ranked ASP World #1, went next-level the entire event, posting 9's (and better) seemingly every heat. After falling behind fast in the final, Mick threw down a 9.37 and a 9.5 in the dying minutes to claim the victory and a much stronger hold on the current World #1 spot heading into the back half of the 2012 ASP World Tour title race.
"Teahupo'o is one of the spots that I've worked hard on throughout my career to improve at," Fanning said. "I made a Final out here before, but to come away with the win is great for my confidence and I'm in a good position heading into the next half of the year. Early days though and there are a lot of guys right up there. It's still anyone's game at this point."
Mick, who is in pursuit of his 3rd ASP World Title, enjoys this victory as the 15th elite win in his career. It's also the 2nd win he's had in 2012, after winning the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach this past Easter. Mick now turns his attention to Lower Trestles, where he will look to duplicate his 2009 winning performance.
