Ron Jon Surf Park will open next year

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 October, 2005 : - - The Atlantic Ocean may still be more than 60 miles away but the waves are getting a whole lot closer for surfers. Ron John Surf Shop has announced its first Ron Jon Surfpark, opening at Festival Bay Mall off International Drive.

“The surfpark is the first of its kind in the world and we’re looking forward to the ground breaking this fall and the grand opening next year,” said Ed Moriarty, president of Ron Jon Surf Shop.

The surfpark will be designed specifically for surfing, body boarding and surfing lifestyle enthusiasts. The park will include three surf pools to accommodate all levels of surfers and bodyboarders — from beginners to professionals. The pools’ unique technology will allow wave configurations suitable for all riders. Waves will cover everything from perfectly peeling three-footers to overhead barrels for the pros.

The surfpark will be supported by a professional staff. Private lessons will also be available for all age groups and skill levels.

The 100,000 square foot park will also feature a fully-stocked Ron Jon pro shop with the newest in surfing wear and equipment, a Ron Jon restaurant, including poolside corporate hospitality suites and party rooms. The suites and rooms have been designed for optimal viewing of all the action throughout the park.

The park will also be home to world class televised surfing events. Private events with up to 1,000 guests are also part of the overall plans.

The heart of the surfpark will be the pro pool with its patented wedge shape, groundswell wave system and Versareef floor. The size of a football field, the pro surf pool will have more than 1.5 million gallons of salt water, and generate up to six waves per minute with wave heights from five to eight feet, and ride lengths from 60 to 100 yards.

The computer adjusted floor allows an almost infinite variety of left and right-breaking wave shapes and includes pre-programmed bottom contours that mimic some of the best natural breaks in the world. The pro pool is designed for experienced surfers and bodyboarders looking for consistent waves and pristine overhead surf conditions.

Surfparks founder and chief executive officer Jamie Meiselmann said the Florida surfing community has been supportive of the project since the plans were announced several years ago.

“We currently have more than 4,000 people on our reserve membership list, and we are thrilled to launch the world’s first surfpark to such a passionate and appreciative audience,” said Meiselmann.
