Support a Team at the SurfAid Cup

Twelve pros compete to raise 60k for SurfAid

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 September, 2014 - Former world championship tour surfer and ASP commentator Rosy Hodge is one of 12 pro/legends lining up to compete in the SurfAid Cup Malibu this Saturday September 6.

Twelve fundraising teams have entered the SurfAid Cup and they have raised nearly $40,000 so far with a target of $60,000. Teams of four surfers aim to raise at least $5,000 for SurfAid and, in order of their fundraising total, each team picks a pro/legend surfer to join them.

Hodge said she was excited to be invited to compete in the SurfAid Cup Malibu. “I think it's a privilege to surf with so many of my heroes in this event and be able to enjoy all of the weekend’s activities at a place as iconic to surfing as Malibu,” Hodge said.

“It's awesome to support a charity like SurfAid. We are so fortunate to be able to travel and enjoy this lifestyle, and it's good to be aware of what SurfAid does and give back to communities we travel to.”

Besides Hodge, other pro surfers who have indicated they will compete include four-time ASP women’s world champion Lisa Andersen, two-time ASP women’s world longboard champion Jen Smith, elite big wave rider Greg Long, ASP World Tour surfers Travis Logie and Adrian Buchan, Strider Wasilewski, Kassia Meador, Brad Gerlach and Taylor Knox.

SurfAid USA president Karl Luber said the contest celebrates the amazing community of people who make it possible for SurfAid to continue to make miracles happen.

“People who share themselves to help others live and thrive,” Luber said. “And it all happens in the water, where we belong. This day is so full of aloha and stoke that the beach lights up with smiles. It’s a beautiful celebration of surfing and the human spirit.”

The 12 fundraising teams are: Firewire, North County Surf, SurfAiders, Malaria Free Mentawai, Frank-N-Riders, Every Mother/Every Child, Surf4Good, Dr Dave & Crew, Malcolm Hates Malaria, Kids Deserve Better, Malaria Sucks and The Hot Generation.

The tag-team SurfAid Cup is part of the MSA Classic Invitational, which is presented by the Malibu Surfing Association from September 5 - 7.

The SurfAid Cup Malibu will start at 1pm on Saturday September 6 and the teams compete in one-hour heats, with six teams battling out the final. An Expression Session will also be held at Malibu on Friday September 5 as a warm-up for the competitors.
