Clean surf greets final day of Murasaki Shonan Open
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 July, 2014 - The Murasaki Shonan Open went off and on schedule with the round of 64 all the way down to the final and crowned a champion today. The conditions at Kugenuma Beach were 1 to 2 ft. with clean conditions and beautiful weather.
ASP Japan Tour official made several calls this morning, the first at 6 a.m. then waited until 9 a.m. to make the final call to launch the event. The athletes hit the water at 9:30 a.m. In testy conditions three local surfers and one Australian surfer hit the finals.
Connor O'Leary (AUS) who finished 9th in June at Baja California was standing 93rd in the WQS rankings prior to this event. O'Leary shows he can score in any conditions and scores a 6.75 for his effort in the final which is the highest score of the entire event.
The local surfers Hamase scores 4.50 and 3.80 for a combined score of 8.30 and finishes the event at 4th. Local surfer Kobayashi scores a 6.00 and 4.50 for a combined score of 10.50points and finishes 3rd. O'Leary backs up his high score with a 4.00 to make a combined score of 10.75 but this was not enough to overcome another local surfer Matsushita with a 5.80 and 5.60 for a combined score of 11.40. Ryota Matsushita is MURASAKI SHONAN OPEN 2014 champion.
