Surf Culture

"Influences" will be the theme of this 5th edition which exhibitions, lectures, music and films

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 May, 2016 - The environmental activist Chris Hines, the artist Wolfgang Bloch, the journalist Júlio Adler, the multifaceted artist Andrew Kidman, the legendary photographer Rusty Miller, the contemporary artist Sandow Birk and Surfilm Festival organizer Sancho Rodriguez are the invited guests of Sagres Surf Culture 2016.

Sagres Surf Culture is back for its fifth edition, which will take place between May 26th and 29th at the town of Sagres, municipality of Vila do Bispo, in Southern Portugal.

This is a special anniversary edition in which surf culture is once again celebrated, now with some of its most important references. "Influences" is the theme of Sagres Surf Culture 2016 and the range of invited guests constitutes a gathering of iconic names as has never been seen before in our country.

The environmental activist Chris Hines, the artist Wolfgang Bloch, the journalist Júlio Adler, the multifaceted artist Andrew Kidman, the legendary photographer Rusty Miller, the contemporary artist Sandow Birk and Surfilm Festibal organizer Sancho Rodriguez are the invited guests of Sagres Surf Culture 2016.

For four days, surf culture will be the object of sharing and reflection with a program in which exhibitions, lectures, music and films stand out.

The first film viewing night will present “Litmus - A Surfing Odyssey“ (1996) and a Q & A with director Andrew Kidman. The second film stand out night is brought to us by SAL – Surf at Lisbon Film Fest.

The epicenter of Sagres Surf Culture is once again the Memmo Baleeira Design Hotel, where the exhibitions, film screening and lectures will take place, but this year the event is spread throughout the town of Sagres with several activities, such as wood surfboard construction (by José Antunes) and surf & bodyboard photography (by Ricardo Bravo) workshops for local schools and a concert with Sam Alone & The Gravediggers, The Fellow Man and Storm & The Sun in the center of the town.

Organized for the first time in 2012, Sagres Surf Culture is an event that was firstly born out of the need to reflect about the state of surf culture in Portugal, bringing together players from several areas: from art to sustainability, and including history, creativity and public intervention.

With its central location at the Memmo Baleeira design hotel in Sagres, municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the heart of The South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, this whole magnificent setting has been a profound inspiration for the event, helping with the strength of its natural beauty to create the unique ambiance that has been experienced and that has touched both the participants and the public.

The event is free to attend and each year a growing number of people has come to witness key note conferences, music, films, exhibitions, concerts and conversations under this spirit of sharing and friendship. A plethora of unique personalities have been included among the invited guests. Artists, thinkers, creators, but first and foremost surfers who share a passion for the ocean.
