The Art Of Surf Exhibit comes to Santa Monica this July

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 June, 2016 - Drew Brophy recently announced a show to pay, in part, tribute the legendary surf artist Rick Griffin. Artists will gather, give live demonstrations and generally celebrate the work of surfing's most famous artist.

The show will also feature a rare Rick Griffin painted surfboard, Eddie Aikau's rescue board and the board Patrick Swayze toted around in the movie Point Break. For a full list of activities see the press release below...

SPECIAL DISPLAY of Three iconic surfboards:

EDDIE AIKAU’S RESCUE BOARD:  The sacred board of Eddie Aikau’s 1978 rescue attempt that took his life.

RICK GRIFFIN PAINTING ON SURFBOARD:  For the first time ever:  Extremely rare surfboard painted by legendary artist Rick Griffin - available for sale.

POINT BREAK SURFBOARD:  Patrick Swayze's surfboard from the original Point Break Movie.

Drew Brophy Presents Live Surf Board Painting Demonstration of his tribute to the late Rick Griffin– Watch the art come to life right before your eyes on the board.  Poster Giveaway of Brophy’s surf art for attendees, while supplies last.

Joshua Paskowitz discusses his life and times as documented in the film about his family,  “Surfwise”

Panel featuring cast of Point Break. John Philbin, BoJesse Christopher, and members of the cast of Point Break Live.

GRAND OPENING EXHIBIT PARTY:  Join us for an exciting evening celebrating The Art of Surf, an Exhibit featuring Surf Art with most artists present.

Exhibit Features:  Very special pieces by Rick Griffin, Drew Brophy, Joshua Paskowitz, Roy Gonzalez, John Severson, Jeff Divine, John Van Hamersveld, Dan Merkel, Chloe Trujillo, Bob Hasbrook and more.  All art, unless indicated, will be available for sale with a portion being donated back to ONE


RICK GRIFFIN:  One of the pioneers of surf art.  Proudly featuring a rare painted surfboard from the legendary artist.

DREW BROPHY: Surf Lifestyle Artist who popularized art on surfboards. Displaying Surf Art on Boards and Canvases.

JOSHUA PASKOWITZ: Surf Artist, and accomplished Musician from The FLYS. Exhibiting art and showing of the film based on his family SURFWISE.

JOHN SEVERSON: Iconic Founder of Surfer Magazine, Artist & Movie Maker.

JEFF DIVINE: "One the best Surf Photographers in surfing. His keen eye brought us back glimpses of the North Shore and recorded the bold and exciting surfers that defined the 70s." Liquid Salt

JOHN VAN HAMERSVELD: American Graphic Artist & Illustrator who designed Record Jackets for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and many others. Designed the iconic Endless Summer Movie Poster.

ROY GONZALEZ: Surf artist for over forty years, Roy has been an icon in the extreme sports industries, art and design circles. Personally educated by the art legends of the ‘70s such as Rick Griffin and Robert Williams He exhibiting original paintings. 

CHLOE TRUJILLO: Raised in Paris by fashion designer parents and an opera singer grandfather, Chloe grew up surrounded by music, beauty, art and design. She has enjoyed success as a fine artist, designer and musician.

DAN MERKEL:  Emmy Award Winning legendary surf lensman for over 30 years. Dan is known for some of the “Free Ride” Eras most memorable images.

LISA NIEMI SWAYZE - Kindly showcasing Patrick's Swayze's board and art from the movie Point Break.

BOB HASBROOK – Has generously allowed us to show Eddie Aikau’s board from his personal collection.


Paul Butler is an internationally acclaimed multi-media artist and product developer. Paul’s has created product for The Walt Disney Company and Ralph Lauren to name a few. He was raised in Laguna Beach and has a love of surfing that spans decades. This fact, coupled with his commitment to the cause of ONE Recovery makes this a very special production for him.
