Clean and cold Black's Beach hosts inaugural NSSA College event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 November, 2013 : - - The Southwest Conference College Team Season opened up this weekend with event number one at Blacks Beach in San Diego.  It was a chilly weekend in southern California with temps in the low 60’s. The waves were clean with fun 2-3 foot peaks, semi walled with some steep open faced sections. A total of 23 teams competed in the season opener vying for a good result and a solid jump-start to the season standings.

The college surfers maximized fun conditions and incredible action-packed, high scoring performances were witnessed. The NSSA would like to give a big shout-out to UCSD for traditionally hosting the College opener at legendary Blacks beach. This event was the first of four in the 2013-14 College Season series.

Highlights from Southwest Conference College Team Season event #1 include the reigning National Champions San Diego State Aztecs returned to the new season rock solid taking a 136-127 victory over the Saddleback College Gaucho’s.

The Aztecs were off to a quick start advancing most of their 6-man squad to round two. The Aztecs only lost one team member in round one and were able to place the remaining members in the quarterfinals.

The Aztecs were able to keep the momentum going by placing to surfers in the College Mens final, and one female in the College Womens final.  The Saddleback team lost two of the Mens squad in round one, but were able to place two team members in the College Mens final.  They also had a Longboarder and a Woman competitor in the finals to help with their runner up position.

Former NSSA National College Men’s Champion Dayton Silva added firepower to the Aztec’s Men’s squad taking third place in the College Men’s final.Mira Costa placed third overall in the standings with new team member Colin Richardson making the College Men’s final.

Considered one of the best waves on the coast, Blacks provided plenty of high performance surf and the competitors maximized the fun conditions from round one through the finals. Kicking off round one action, Colin Richardson pulled off three sick backside turns impressing the judging panel en route to winning his first round heat .

Round two action continued to sizzle as the college surfers were ripping! Victor Done from Saddleback posted an 8.66 with a huge gouge on the outside followed by a couple of solid turns to post the highest wave score in round two. Done was also the standout in round three action pulling off some huge, powerful turns completing his waves to the beach.

The College Men’s final saw Saddleback’s Shaw Kobayashi taking a unanimous victory by all three judges. Things started clicking throughout the final for Kobayashi as he continued to build on his rhythm. He had a slow start but towards the end of the heat was able to pull off a couple of huge turns to take the win. Placing second was Saddleback’s Victor Done who was surfing solid through every round.  Rounding out the final was SDSU’S Dayton Silva taking third, Austin Finley from CSUCI taking fourth, UCSD’s David Dittmar taking fifth and Mira Costa’s Colin Richardson finishing in sixth.

In the Longboard division, Casey Powell from USC flared up in the fun Blacks conditions with some polished longboard maneuvers. Powell took command of the event, winning his quarterfinal heat. He went on to place third in the semis which fired him up to take the win in the final. Point Loma’s Joey Wangsness was on point the entire event finishing runner up to Powell. Rounding out the 6-man final was Dennis White from Saddleback in third, Alex Greene from CSUCI in fourth, Dane Peterson from UCSD in fifth and Dylan Sohngen from UCSB in sixth.

Round one College Women’s action saw Marissa Shaw from SDSU post a 17-point ride (out of a possible 20). Shaw was red hot unloading vertical turns and full cutbacks to post the highest heat total in the Women’s round one heats.

In the College Women’s division USD’s Keenan Lineback was on fire! The 2012 National Championship finalist crushed the final posting two excellent 8-point rides (throwing away a high 7-point score for good measure). Former NSSA standout Danielle Wyman from Saddleback was also killing it placing first in all three of the preliminary rounds.

Wyman had a one solid score but was unable to find a good backup wave and had to settle for runner-up to Lineback. Rounding out the final was Marissa Shaw from SDSU taking third, Erika Cook from CSULB taking fourth, Larissa Lambrou from Mira Costa taking fifth and Niki Sfeir from UCSD finishing in sixth.

The NSSA Southwest Conference is proud to have support from Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Scosche and Channel Islands.
