Dion Atkinson dominates for Seaford in clean surf
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 October, 2013 : - - Waitpinga Beach South Australia - Seaford Boardriders Club have opened Australia's biggest ever professional Boardriding Club Series by winning the South Australian qualifying round of the Be The Influence Australian Boardriders Battle.
By winning Seaford now qualify for the Be The Influence Australian Boardriders Battle final which will run on Australian Day weekend in Cronulla NSW to decide Australia's top Boardriding Club with over $100 000 in prize money up for grabs.
Led by experienced ASP World Tour surfer Dion Atkinson, Seaford dominated the excellent powerful clean 2m (5 feet) surf to take a comprehensive victory over South Coast Boardriders Club (Victor Harbour) with Seaview Roaders Boardriders Club in third place.
Atkinson surfed a marathon 7 heats and comfortably won every heat with no less than seven excellent 8 point plus wave scores along with the days only perfect 10 point ride. "An amazing day and it's a special feeling to represent your club and surf for a team - probably more pressure than surfing just for yourself as you don't want to let the team down - they're all cheering for you and it's great to come out winners" said Atkinson.
While Atkinson's efforts were clearly dominant, his team mates were also performing well to add to Seaford's dominance on the day. Teale Vanner, Kyle Imgraben, Francis Harsing, Brinkley Davies, Amy Gore and David Steele all excelled at various stages in the high performance surf at Waitpinga Beach which saw Seaford win all three disciplines - Pairs, Skins and the final Teams Challenge.
An added interest to Atkinson's outstanding performance today surrounds the excitement in South Australia around his present ASP World Championship Tour aspirations which sees Atkinson right on the cusp of qualifying for the elite top 36 surfers in the world for next years tour. Atkinson will leave for his final three events of the season this week, culminating in Hawaii and a reasonable performance will see him qualify.
"I feel good and ready for these final three events - I'm not really nervous simply because I feel I've done everything I can to be ready to give this my best shot - It's exciting and I hope it turns out that I qualify" said Atkinson. Seaford Boardriders officially become the first club to qualify for the final in January!
A total of sixteen clubs from all over Australia will qualify for the national final which runs on Australia Day weekend in Cronulla and as a sanctioned Association of Surfing Professionals event Australia's best professional surfers will be going back to their grassroots to surf for their club in the quest to win the bragging rights as Australia's number one Boardriding Club which includes $20 000 first place prize money from the $105 000 total prize money pool.
Seaford Boardriders Club Team Captain David Steele summed up Seaford's feelings saying " We prepared ourselves for this event and to come away with the win and now to represent South Australia at the finals will be really special.
We know there will be super strong clubs including Snapper Rocks, Narrabeen, Lennox/Ballina (Le-BA) and many more and to surf and compete against the best surfers in the world like Joel Parkinson, Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow will be an incredible experience for our surfers and we'll go to Sydney well prepared and do our best."
The next regional qualifying round runs in Forster on the mid north coast of NSW on the 26/27 October with boardriding clubs from the Central Coast through to the northern border competing for the two spots available from this qualifying round.
