A major retrospective exhibit on legendary surf pioneer Hobie Alter opens in October 2012
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 October, 2012 : - - The California Surf Museum (CSM) located at 312 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA 92054 is teaming up with the Hobie family to celebrate surf icon Hobart “Hobie” Alter’s birthday along with the museums grand opening of the Hobie Surfboard Exhibit, “Shaping A Culture” on Saturday, October 20, 2012, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. As with all CSM celebrations, aloha attire, live music, food, beverages, surf legends, pro surfers and fun are standard.
Hobie Surfboards has called on their premiere stable of shapers, both past and present, to produce unique, one-of-a-kind surfboards representing Hobie’s rich history for a surfboard auction to benefit the California Surf Museum. The Hobie display will be a visual timeline journey of surfboards, SUP’s, products, archive memorabilia and photos spanning over seven decades; also on display is a Hobie Catamaran on the museum roof.
The exhibit and the event will be a celebration of Hobie's myriad achievements as a seminal Renaissance man in the surf culture. A genius at simple but unforgettable imagery, Hobie’s shapes, stores, team, clothing line and artistic style were benchmarks in the boom of the fifties and sixties modern surf era and continue to thrive today.
Alter is a founding pioneer in the surfboard shaping industry, creator of the Hobie Cat, and founder of the Hobie Company. A successful surf entrepreneur, Alter is world renowned as the man behind the development of the foam-and-fiberglass surfboard. His label, Hobie, remains one of the top-selling surfboard brands of all time. He is also the creator of the Hobie 33 ultralight-displacement sailboat and a mass-produced radio-controlled glider, the Hobie Hawk.
“Over more than seventy years this man has had an influence on the way surfers and beach aficionado’s experienced their lives. Hobie is a giant of the surf world – a man who truly helped to shape an entire culture; this will be an evening of epic proportion,” says California Surf Museum President Jim Kempton.
