The first Latin American to ever win a world title, Sofia Mulanovich is a national hero in her home country of Peru. Mulanovich began surfing professionally at age 13. In 2004 she won the world championship title, dethroning the six-time consecutive world champion Layne Beachley and proudly representing Peru. The tiny but powerful regular-footer has been featured in many surf films including Blue Crush and Peel: The Peru Project. She won the coveted ESPY award for best female action sports athlete in 2005. After a decade of being a solid competitive threat, Sofia retired from the world tour in 2013. She continues to dedicate herself to many non-profit organizations, promoting surfing and education throughout Peru and the world.
