'Sofia' to screen at 2006 SLO International Film Festival

“SOFIA” TO SCREEN AT SLO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL!

“Si, se puede!” (Yes, you can!) is theme for the dynamic Peruviana

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 March, 2006 : - - San Luis Obispo, CA – Sofia: A Documentary, featuring 2004 World Champion of Professional Women’s Surfing, Sofia Mulanovich of Peru, will be featured in it’s West Coast premiere at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival on Thursday March 9. In the film’s premiere at the 2006 X Dance Film Festival in Park City, Utah on January 20, 2006, it was nominated in the Best Biography, Best Director and Best Picture Categories, and won the Best Emerging Filmmaker Award.

Mulanovich finished off her second year on the elite ASP WCT tour with a world title in Haleiwa, Hawaii at the Roxy Pro. She is the first South American to ever achieve such coveted success in the world of professional surfing. Since winning her first world title, Mulanovich has been presented the elite Laurel’s Sport Award by President Toledo of Peru and her name has been placed on the outside of the National Stadium in Lima, Peru. Mulanovich is a South American heroine and icon.

“I was honored to have “Sofia” screen at the X Dance Film Festival, and now at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival” stated Mulanovich. “Never in a million years did I think surfing would bring me such attention, I surf because I love it, all of this is just amazing to me!” exclaimed the adorable Peruviana.

Sofia takes the viewer on an intimate ride beginning with a trip to Hawaii told through the eyes, voice and photographs of Renzo Giraldo.  Giraldo is an established Lima photographer on assignment for El Comercio, the largest daily newspaper in Peru.  He has been sent to follow Sofia’s quest to win her potential World Championship Title in Hawaii.

The story of Sofia in Hawaii is sewn together with seven sub-stories that take the audience back to Peru.  These stories are about characters that Sofia has influenced or those who have encouraged her to believe in her dream.  One example is 17 year-old Anali Gomez who is from a poor barrio in Sofia’s hometown of Punta Hermosa.  Since Anali was a young girl, she looked up to Sofia; Sofia recognized Anali’s potential and gave Anali her first surfboard. Anali recounts the day Sofia gave her the board, the day she fell in love with surfing. Today, Anali Gomez is the 2004 Latin American Champion of surfing.

After Sofia wins the Title in Hawaii, Giraldo returns to Lima to witness a movement sparked by Sofia’s victory. The masses of people from every walk and corner of Peru have united in pride and confidence in their national hero.  The quest for a World Title morphs into a story of an unlikely heroine mobilizing her people to follow their dreams.  Sofia embodies Peru’s new wave toward progress, proving the country’s motto, “Sí se puede!”  “Yes, you can!”

In a featured presentation earlier the same evening (March 9) at the festival, the award-winning Sundance Film Festival surfing documentary “Riding Giants” will be screened, with many of the film’s stars and makers in attendance, including Greg Noll, Stacy Peralta, Jeff Clark, and Sam George. “To screen the phenomenal surfing documentary Riding Giants, and follow that up the same night with the inspiring Sofia, is a true surf film feast for the festival!” grinned festival Board member Steve Gibby, a veteran producer/director of world surfing television programs. “Surfing is such an ingrained portion of Central Coast culture, that bringing these films here made infinite sense”.
