Trump Manoeuvres Spun and Huge Airs Completed to Launch the First Event of the Arnette Roulette

Surfersvillage Global Surf News
, 15 January, 2011 : - - The Gold Coast lived up to its reputation as the surf capital of Australia today, providing Australia’s most talented aerial surfers under 25 years of age with solid 6 foot (2 metre) waves for the first event of the highly anticipated Arnette Roulette on the Gold Coast.

With a healthy bounty of cash and prizes up for grabs, the strong field of aerialists revelled in the tricky, two metre surf, taking to the air displaying futuristic off the lip manoeuvres in an all new never seen before contest format.

As the game wheel was spun and the trump manoeuvres were decided, the field of 39 surfers took to the sky heat after heat in the hope of pulling off the all important trump air which would secure an additional two points on top of their completed wave score.

In the unforgiving waves surfers pushed forward showcasing their best trump moves, nailing huge airs and progressing one step closer to winning the one off wildcard spot into the 2011 Boost Mobile Surf Sho Main Event in Bondi.

In the blue ribbon final of the event, finalists showed no fear tackling the huge surf, although it was Bondi surfer Otis Carey (NSW), who chose to surf the inside reformer shore break and managed to nail a clean air reverse aerial which was rewarded handsomely by the judges with a single wave score of 7.33.

Carey’s tactics and solid performance proved too strong for Oney Anwar (Palm Beach, QLD), Brad King (Kingscliff, NSW), Joel Ford (Cabarita, NSW), Duncan McNicol (Caves Beach, NSW) and Tugun’s Thomas Woods (QLD) who finished second to sixth respectively.

“The conditions were extremely tricky out in the back break so I made the decision to move to the shore break and concentrate on completing aerials which I knew I could complete,” said Carey. “The cash and prizes are a massive bonus for me, I came to this event to have fun and just do aerials.”

“I had so much fun today and I can’t wait until the final event of the series in Maroubra,” finished Carey

Otis is a renowned aerial specialist who is now at the top of the Arnette Roulette ratings leading into the final event of the Arnette Roulette series.

Finals action is sure to be electrifying as ratings leaders look for huge scores to raise their total point scores in the final of the Arnette Roulette on the 12th February – Maroubra, NSW.

Final Results:
1st place - Otis Carey (Bondi, NSW)
2nd place - Oney Anwar (Palm Beach, QLD)
3rd place - Brad King (Kingscliff, NSW)
4th place - Joel Ford (Cabarita, NSW)
5th place - Duncan McNicol (Caves Beach, NSW)
6th place - Thomas Woods (Tugun, QLD)

The Boost Mobile SurfSho wildcard will be awarded to the surfer with the two best results from the two Arnette Roulette events. Each event shares a cash prize purse of $3,000 inclusive of a winner’s cheque of $1,500.

The winner from each event will also surf away with an Arnette prize pack (Sunglasses and product), Insight wardrobe (RRP $1500), a Haydenshapes FiberFlex Surfboard, FCS Fins & Leash, a Surfing World Magazine subscription, and a Boost Mobile handset.

The two events utilises a dynamic ‘aerial’ format and will be open to 48 surfers respectively. The format incorporates a spinning game wheel that will be spun at the start of each heat to determine the \'TRUMP\' manoeuvre.  Surfers will be allowed to perform other aerial based moves during the heat, but performing a successful trump move in the respective heat will be awarded an additional 2-points.

Surfers will be judged on their best one-wave and a typical 20-minute heat will see 6 surfers competing. 50% progression applies through Round 1 and 2, and the semi-final.
