2014 Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Champs

ASP 4-Star  Men's Event
Virginia Beach, Virginia
17 - 24 August 2014

Top talent, Patrick Gudauskas ready to compete in ECSC

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 August, 2014 - The Association of Surfing Professionals 4-star Vans Pro and 2-Star Vans Pro Junior are set to run at 1st Street Jetty from August 18 through 24 as a part of the 52nd annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The ASP Qualification Series (QS) event will start a three-event East Coast leg, running though to mid-September while the Vans Pro Junior will determine qualifiers for the coveted ASP World Junior Championships.

Last year’s Vans Pro winner Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 28, will look to defend his title while enjoying the change of scenery that the East Coast has to offer. Gudauskas is working towards building his rank in the Qualification Series in hopes to return to the main stage of the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT).

"Its great to return as defending champion,” Gudauskas said. “Any time you can win an ASP event, it’s a huge accomplishment in my book. My victory last year came at a great time for me because it transferred me in to a big run at Lowers, where I overcame Kelly Slater. I'm fired up at the opportunity to do the same this year, both defending the title and creating a kick start to the second half of my qualification campaign.”

Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 26, will also be competing at the Vans Pro fresh off of a win at the recent 5-Star QS event in Lacanau, France.

Michael Dunphy (Virginia Beach, VA), 22, is one local standout that hopes to capitalize on his knowledge of 1st Street Jetty at the Vans Pro with aspirations of a solid result in his hometown.

"Last year I had a bad year and this year I'm just trying to have fun and surf better,” Dunphy said. “I surf 1st Street all the time and feel really comfortable out there. Hopefully, I can get a few waves. I've been surfing ECSC since I was five. It’s a special event to me and I'd like to try to win one."

ECSC will also play host to the 2-Star Vans Pro Junior event giving rising stars under 20 years old a chance to build crucial points and a potential berth into the 2014 ASP World Junior Championships.
