Surfings Official State of Origin Set To Ignite Masses At Oakley State Teams Challenge On Sunshine Coast
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 October, 2008 : - - Surfings official state of origin is set to ignite the masses with the countrys hottest surfers ready to battle it out in the annual Oakley State Teams Challenge on the Sunshine Coast this weekend. In its third year, the innovative tournament pits teams from New South Wales and Queensland against each other in a surfing state versus surfing state style showdown.
Its one title apiece to both teams thus far with NSW taking the title in 2006 and Qld winning last years series. Coolum Beach will host the prestigious tournament, running from October 25-26, with competitors fighting it out across two rounds of singles, doubles, tandem and expression period formats for $9,000 in cash and prizes. The total team scores from the two days of action will be added to determine the winner.
With battle lines drawn, reigning title holders Queensland have called upon the professional guidance of team coach Gary Elkerton to lead his troops of Brent Dorrington (Coolangatta), Blake Ainsworth (Coolangatta), Blake Wilson (Alexandra Headlands), Chris Friend (Alexandra Headlands) and Lincoln Taylor (Nth Stradbroke Island) to back-to-back wins.
The Maroons proved to be the better side in last years showdown, trumping the Blues in their own backyard. NSW came within a whisker of winning the state of origin themed event but it was Queensland sealing victory in the final round of competition.
Sunshine Coast ace Wilson, who represented Queensland in last years event, is pumped to have another shot at his southern rivals. Bring it on, he said. We want to follow in the path of our rugby league team and cream NSW this year. Theres surely going to be some passion involved.

Representing NSW under the assistance of former world tour surfer Richie Lovett will be Jarrad Howse (Manly), Chris Salisbury (Newport), Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay), Matt Bemrose (Curl Curl) and Davey Cathels (Narrabeen). Blues team coach Lovett believes that NSW boasts the surfing talent to avoid another whitewash to the hands of Queensland.
The boys have the full array of tricks needed to win, he said. Were amped to invade Qld on their home turf and settle the score. The title is coming home with the Blue team. Competition is expected to commence at Coolum Beach on Saturday 25th October, 2008 at 9am sharp.
