Bells Beach turns on for state titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 September, 2015 - Bells Beach - Steve Noble has claimed his second TOLL Victorian Open Title and India Robinson took her maiden TOLL Victorian Open Women’s Title today at Bells Beach. Competitors were greeted with 3-4ft of groundswell and light offshore winds at the well-known break for the final round of the state wide series.

Noble entered the event leading the ratings and did enough to solidify his lead and claim the title four years after his previous win. Placing second in the Final, Noble finished the year on 3720 points in front of Jack Perry (Jan Juc, VIC) who finished on 3460 points. Perry was unable to make it past Round 2 at Bells Beach.

“Its good to win another state title, especially after coming so close last year” said an elated Noble. “This year I felt a bit fitter so it was nice to win because I’m not getting any younger. Any time you get to surf Bells with 3 other people in the water is special, and you can never surf this place enough”

Noble will now get a direct seed into the final round of the Rip Curl Pro Trials for a shot at making the Main Rounds of the World Tour event. “The standard of surfing in the Trials is so high, it’s hard to put it all together to get that one spot, but I am looking forward to it.”

Taking out the Bells Beach round of the series was local, Cahill Bell-Warren (Bells Beach, VIC). This is Bell-Warren’s fourth victory at Bells Beach showing his superior knowledge of the wave.

Bell-Warren Finished on a heat total of 12.37 points (out of a possible 20) in front of Noble’s 10.13 points.

Placing in third was Nigel Muscroft (Jan Juc, VIC) with Josh Johnson Baxter (Ocean Grove) in fourth.

India Robinson required a solid results heading into the final event of the year and subsequently delivered placing in second behind former Open Women Champion Zoe Clarke (Jan Juc, VIC).

“I am super stoked to take it out” said Robinson. “Zoe (Clarke) has been surfing really well and the waves were really fun today.” Finishing the series on 3720 points, Robinson placed above Sophie Fletcher (Phillip Island, VIC) who ended with a total of 3460 points.

Robinson was recently selected in the Under 16 Girls Australian Team heading to the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in October this year.

“I can’t wait to go to the Worlds (ISA World Junior Championships), I have been training heaps and this is good preparation for that.”

Clarke was the in form surfer of the event, rampaging through the opening round to take the Final with a heat total of 15 points. Robinson finished in second on 11.50 points.

Placing in third was Jade Ogilvie (Point Lonsdale, VIC) on 8.90 points with Shayleigh Paterson (Point Lonsdale, VIC) in fourth on 6.84 points.

The TOLL Victorian Open Series is presented by HIF (Health Insurance Fund Australia) and supported by MODOM, Coastalwatch PLUS, Play it Safe by the Water – Never Surf Alone and Cancer Council Sunscreen.
