Stop 2 heads to Denmark to complete 17 divisions
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 May, 2014 - The much anticipated second event of the Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF) WA Longboard & SUP Titles presented by SunSmart, heads south to the open beaches of Denmark this weekend with a massive 17 divisions set to be contested.
Located over four hours south of Perth, Denmark provides an amazing backdrop for the states best competitive longboarders and stand up paddleboarders, who are vying for the opportunity to qualify for the WA State Team to compete at the National Titles later this year.
The second event of a three event series which started in Yallingup in February, will witness the sports great diversity with competitors ranging from under 18 juniors, to over 65 masters, combined with the stand up paddle (SUP) divisions to create a true festival style atmosphere with an exciting mix of families, surfing buddies and spectators all converging on the south coast.
Ocean Beach will be the prime event location for the weekend and offers some of the most ideal conditions for longboarding in Australia. Within a relatively sheltered bay, it handles small to large surf and offers an abundance of options for event officials.
"Denmark is ideal surf territory, still largely undiscovered, it's less crowded than the west coast it is one of my favourite event locations to take our travel to." Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks said.
Competitors look like they'll be greeted by a large swell on Saturday with calm and clean conditions on Sunday.
"I know I will not be the only one who will be trying my best this weekend, everyone is just as hungry for a win at Denmark and with the waves we can go to down there, it's going to be a fun weekend." Said current Open Women's ratings leader and dual Australian Longboard Champion Georgia Young (Swanbourne).
Local favourite and current U16 junior shortboard Champion Emi Campbell (Denmark) will join Young in the Open Women's division as well as competing in the U18 Junior Women's division. Campbell who has grown up surfing Ocean Beach and the surrounding breaks of Denmark will be using her local knowledge and doing her best to win the on familiar ground.
"It's always nice to have one event at home this year," Campbell said. "We do a lot of travelling to other locations around WA for the competitions so to sleep in my own bed this weekend and surf my home breaks will be really great."
In the SUP divisions Rick and Jake Jakovich (Gracetown) will be the ones to watch in an ever growing field of new entrants including established names Mike Galvin (Cottesloe) and Justin Redman (Yallingup). The event will offer SUP surfing divisions including; Open Men, Open Women, O40 Men and the newly recognised O50 Men's.
