Tropical Cyclone Marcia now a category four system
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 February, 2015 - The most recent reports from the Bureau of Meteorology is that Marcia will reach Category 5 status before making landfall. "Severe tropical cyclone Marcia, a category 4 cyclone, continues to intensify as it moves west-southwest towards the Queensland coast,” the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said in a statement.
The Bureau of Meteorology says sustained winds near the centre are now 195 km/h, with wind gusts to 270 km/h.
Mysurf.TV has aired a clip of the Gold Coast's most famous points going off as Marcia spins, pumping swell into spots like Snapper, Greenmount and Kirra. Check the clip here.
The cyclone's movement has slowed in recent hours, and it is expected to turn more southwest during the next few hours and make landfall between Mackay and Gladstone early on Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorology says a very destructive central core, spanning less than 100 kilometres, would generate gusts up to 260 kilometres an hour and the areas between Mackay and Gladstone will be worst hit.
