Mikey McDonagh hits his stride as event launches

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 October, 2015 - Bar Beach, Newcastle - Event two on the Subway® Surf Series calendar kicked off in clean two-to-three foot peaks at Bar Beach today, as competitors battled it out in an attempt to seal their positions into tomorrow’s final rounds. Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) and Sandon Whittaker (Avoca, NSW) went toe-to-toe and blow-for-blow in their first round exchange in the Under-18 Boys.

However, Mikey was able to gain the upper-hand when he posted a perfect ten-point ride. Whittaker managed to get within striking distance, notching up an impressive eight-point ride, but was unable to find the back-up score required to usurp McDonagh from the top spot and had to settle for second position. Both surfers will make their next appearance in the quarterfinals.

Other Under-18 Boys round one winners included: Zane Clifford (Boat Harbour, NSW), Jack Murray (Lennox Head, NSW), Morgan Ciblic (Merewether, NSW), Kyuss King (Byron Bay, NSW) and Marlon Newling (Avalon, NSW). Bodhi Leigh-Jones (Avalon, NSW) kicked off her Subway® Surf Series campaign with a bang, posting an impressive 8.4 scoring wave in the Under-16 Girls.

The Northern Beaches surfer linked together a chain of powerful manoeuvres to post the score, which allowed her to take the win ahead of fellow Northern Beaches surfer Alysse Cooper (Queenscliff, NSW) and Jessie Van Niekerk (Casuarina, NSW) who took second and third respectively. Leigh-Jones also won her Under-18 Girls round one heat for a variety of solid turns.
Other Under-16 Girls round one winners included: Kiara Meredith (Barrack Heights, NSW), Zoe Ifield (North Entrance, NSW), Anne Dos Santos (Dee Why, NSW) and Lara Damelian (Bondi, NSW)
Bella Wilton (Manly, NSW) performed an array of massive backhand cracks to lock in an impressive 8.00 ride in the Under-18 Girls. The Northern Beaches surfer will now face Danielle Hancock (Nords Wharf, NSW), Bodhi Leigh-Jones (Avalon, NSW) and Alysse Cooper in tomorrow’s final.

Over 30 surfers engaged in the 20-minute Expression Session with some stylish combinations and a handful of aerial manoeuvres. Standout surfers included: Sandon Whittaker, Jamie Thompson (Narrabeen, NSW), Bella Wilton and Alysse Cooper who all took home a prize pack courtesy of Billabong.
The main base for event two of the Subway® Surf Series is Merewether with backup locations of Dixon Park, Bar Beach and Newcastle. All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.
The 10-event 2015/2016 Subway® Surf Series returned for its second season, with this weekend’s event, the second of three non-qualifying events leading up to the Subway® Pro-Junior events, sanctioned by the World Surf League (WSL). The winners of the three non-qualifying events, catering to both 18 and under and 16 and under girls’ and boys’ divisions, will attend a Subway® Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina.
The Subway® Pro Junior events, which includes 18 and under boys and girls divisions, form part of the 2016 WSL Australasian Junior Qualifying Series (JQS), providing the winning athletes with an opportunity to win a coveted world title, at the WSL World Junior Championships in early 2017.
Proudly supported by WSL, Surfing Australia and Billabong, the Subway® Surf Series was created to fill a competition void which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers.
It represents an important link in the ‘pathway to the podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, with surfers now able to progress from the Weet-Bix SurfGroms program, onto the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, into the Subway® Surf Series, followed by the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle.
2012 WSL Men’s World Champion Joel Parkinson and WSL World Tour female competitor Laura Enever are ambassadors for the Subway® Surf Series, attending events and mentoring junior surfers.
