Subway gets on Board with the Safe Surfing Program

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 01 April 2004: - - Surfing Australia and Surfing Queensland are proud to announce that Subway Restaurants has come on board as the major partner of the Safe Surfing Program in Queensland.

“Safe Surfing” is a national learn-to-surf program in which participants move through five skill and knowledge based certificate levels. In 2004, 40 000 people are expected to take part in this program that is conducted by 18 licensed surf schools in Queensland. This is part of Surfing Australia’s large scale membership and participation development program which is supported by the Australian Sports Commission.

Surfing Australia CEO, Alan Atkins, said Safe Surfing was a comprehensive and integrated program. “It helps participants from all backgrounds and with all levels of physical ability to develop both their surfing skills and their knowledge of the environment, first aid, oceanography and the surf industry,” he said.

Champion Surfer, Stephanie Gilmore said "Surfing is one of Australia´s fastest developing sports and Queensland has some of the best beaches in the world so it’s fantastic to see that this program is so popular. It will encourage more young girls to get into surfing. I only wish it had of been available when I started high school."

Subway Restaurants has committed to a 12 month partnership with Safe Surfing in Queensland with the view to extending this nationally in 2005.

‘The Australian Sports Commission, as a key driver of the targeted sport program that’s behind the Safe Surfing program, is very pleased that Subway is supporting this great initiative in Queensland,’ Australian Sports Commission CEO Mark Peters said. ‘It is an excellent example of how government, a peak sporting body and the corporate sector can work together to get more people involved in sport—and help build a fitter and healthier nation.’

David Cohen, Gold Coast Subway Franchisee owner was excited about the new partnership. “Subway and the safe surfing program area great fit. Like surfing, subway promotes healthy living, especially for young people’ he said.
