Event expected to roll in large surf at Sunset Beach
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 January, 2016 - The Sunset Pro, a three-day event held at Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore, is about a week and a half away, with a waiting period from January 17 - 27. This event kicks off the 2016 World Surf League (WSL) season in Hawaii, and with plenty of waves on the horizon we should be off to a great start.
Also part of the event is the Sunset Pro Junior and Sunset Pro Junior Women's, which highlight the region's best youthful athletes who hold the future of surfing in their hands. Defending champions are Seth Moniz (Honolulu, Oahu) and Dax McGill (North Shore, Oahu), both who are currently in Portugal for the Ericeira World Junior Championships.
There is no shortage of surf on the forecast for the Sunset Pro and Junior Pro, and Surfline's longterm report predicts a NW swell producing waves in the double overhead range. This winter has generated extremely large surf, which has kept the North Shore in the media spotlight. This surf competition is anticipated to add to the excitement as both veteran and junior athletes battle fierce conditions in the Sunset lineup.
Sunset Pro defending champion Hank Gaskell (Hana, Maui) will return this year to compete, along with key athletes Sunny Garcia (Waianae, Oahu), Bruce Irons (Hanalei, Kauai), Ian Walsh (Haiku, Maui) and new WSL tour rookie Conner Coffin (Montecito, CA). There is an international mix of competitors for this event, including representation from Argentina, Japan, Brazil, Italy, Uruguay, Australia and more, which should bode well for an exciting 2016 Hawaii Qualifying Series (QS) kick off.
