Surf Hardware International (FCS) Acquires Eskimo Foam
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 May, 2006 : - - Surf Hardware International, the parent company of FCS, has acquired Australian surfboard blank manufacturer Eskimo Foam for an undisclosed sum. The plan is to slowly ramp up production while focusing on building high-performance blanks for select customers in Australia and the U.S.
According to Phil Ward, CEO of Surf Hardware International, As a company, the business has done a great job of elevating the perception of fins from being just a material part of the surfboard to being a performance component. Partnering with the right polyurethane blank company will also help us elevate the blank from being just a building material to a performance component.
Eskimo was founded by Oz shaper extraordinaire James Chilli Cheale, who remains a significant shareholder in the company and intensely involved with its day-to-day development. To have that stability and distribution beside us with SHI, and just the way they want to go about it, really suits me, says Chilli. We dont want to take over the world. We really want to follow the goals of being a high-profile core.
Ward says the acquisition sits comfortably inside SHIs existing business plan. In terms of our manufacturing footprint and our sales core, Eskimo wont really change us much at all, he says. We probably call on more accounts than anyone in the whole surf industry. So fundamentally we see this as a pretty natural fit. Its a real opportunity to utilize the skills and relationships of both our sales team and the Eskimo guys.
