SurfAid Cup brings class, style to iconic Bondi Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 May, 2016 - A perfect autumn day set the scene for the inaugural SurfAid Cup at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Friday May 27, 2016. Twelve corporate teams raised over $87,000 for humanitarian organisation SurfAid, a huge result for a first time event.

Alex Nikov, Glen Butler, Bede Schubert, Sam Franklin and Nick Rudder from Macquarie raised over $21,000 to take out the fundraising competition. They were followed by Aquabumps in second place and Charter Hall in a close third.

“It was pumping 2-4 foot surf in the southern corner at Bondi which enabled plenty of high performance surfing from some of the areas best local surfers. Great to see Krystian Kymerson and Ryan Whippet Clark both scoring 10 point rides” said Contest Director, Steve Harrison.

The judges were impressed with the level of surfing from all the competitors. Pro surfers included Matt Griggs, Chris Friend and Blake Thornton, and Bondi Lifeguards Harries Carroll and Nicola Atherton.

During the final, the crowd was treated to some exceptional surfing. Nick Ebrill (Charter Hall), Luke Mussett (Bucket List) and Max Ayshford (Lifecycle Fitness) kept the crowd on their feet. The Bucket List won the Surfing Trophy, Lifecycle Fitness came second followed by Charter Hall in third and Lets Go Surfing fourth.

The Bucket List team: Krystian Kymerson, Luke Mussett, Ian Wallace and John Botella, selected former pro surfer and all-round legend, Toby Martin.

All funds raised contribute to SurfAid’s mother and child health programs in remote villages in Indonesian surfing locations: Nias, Mentawai islands, Sumbawa and Sumba. “The SurfAid Cup Bondi has been embraced by the local community. We are so grateful for the outstanding efforts in raising over $86,000 for SurfAid. The money will provide clean water, health education and mosquito nets. SurfAid provides practical, low cost, yet high impact solutions. Days like today show that surfers can make a real difference and give back to the places we love.” said Andrew Judge, SurfAid’s CEO.
