2017 Rapid Securities SurfAid Cup

2017 Rapid Securities SurfAid Cup charity event to hit the Gold Coast this Friday

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2017 - Gold Coast, Queensland - The 2017 Rapid Securities SurfAid Cup is set to hit the Gold Coast this Friday the 20th of October for a huge day of surfing in support of a great cause.

The event is a tag-team based competition like no other, with corporate groups raising funds in order to compete alongside a pro surfer of their choice, all in the name of charity. The Gold Coast stop is one of five events held annually in Australia, on top of the three events held in the US. Over the years the event has been supported by some of the biggest and most iconic names in surfing including Tom Carroll, Shane Dorian, Mark Occhilupo, Layne Beachley, Rob Machado, Owen Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons.

Started by a group of concerned surfers in 2000, SurfAid is an award winning charity that works with communities in remote parts of Indonesia to help bring clean water & sanitation, basic healthcare and improved nutrition. The SurfAid Cup is the organisation’s flagship fundraising event and has raised $3 million across seven locations spread right across the globe since its beginnings in 2011.

This year’s event will include an extensive list of pro surfers including ex World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour surfer and SurfAid ambassador Taj Burrow.

“I’m stoked to be surfing in the SurfAid Cup Gold Coast. SurfAid do great work in Indo and I just reckon it makes sense to give back. I jumped in the kitchen at Surfing Chefs for SurfAid last year and we raised $73k, which was amazing,” said Burrow.

“Luckily my surfing’s a bit better than my cooking, so if you want a chance to surf with me for a day, put in a Team, do some fundraising, and let’s get some waves for a good cause!”

Other pro surfers and local shredders surfing in this Friday’s event include Kiwi surfing legend and ex WSL Championship Tour surfer Ricardo Christie, big wave surfer and XXL award winner Dylan Longbottom, WSL Qualifying Series surfers Asher Wales, Nathan Cook and Pacha Light, 2016 Under 18 Boy’s Queensland Champion Liam O’Brien and many more.

Teams that will be lining up this Friday include Rapid Securities, Firewire, Surfing Chefs, Vissla, Komune, Surfing Queensland, Balter, ALSA Surfing Lawyers, Plenary Group, Ray White as well as a team of groms from Burleigh Heads State School.

As part of the event in 2017 there is an auction running until 3pm Wednesday October 18th, with all proceeds going directly to SurfAid, to further help with their work in Indonesia.

Items include;
Taj Burrow signed board
Mick Fanning competition quiver board
A week’s stay at Komune in Bali
A signed Brisbane Broncos jersey
Dinner for four at critically acclaimed Esquire restaurant in Brisbane
