Man's board hits him in the face
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 January, 2016 - A surfer has died at Turner Beach in Yamba after being struck in the head with his own surfboard. Surfers nearby discovered the 54-year-old man floating face down in the water.
"He was surfing on his own within 20 metres of three other surfers and at some stage he caught a wave and fell off his board and the board hit him in the bridge of the nose," Clarence Valley lifeguard supervisor Greg Wyllie told the Northern Star.
"The three surfers and a lifeguard all responded in a synchronised manner to the man, who was face down in the water within two minutes and brought him to shore unconscious."
Wyllie added that the lifeguard started CPR and was aided by an off-duty paramedic and nurse.
Despite having the best people on hand to care for the man, he was pronounced dead when he arrived at Maclean Hospital in Northern New South Wales.
