Teen surfer receives anti-shark wrist device for Christmas, gets bitten
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 December, 2016 - 16-year-old North Hutchinson Island, Florida, resident Zack Davis was bitten by a shark while surfing near his house.
The shark, thought to be a five-foot long blacktop, bit down on Zack’s right arm. According to the Miami Herald and other news outlets on Zack’s left wrist he wore a SharkBanz shark repellent wristband.
Zack told news agencies he had jumped off a wave and the shark grabbed his arm, holding on for two or three seconds while dragging him along the bottom. Zack got out of the water and wrapped his leash around his arm as a makeshift tourniquet and then ran to his house nearby.
His mom took him to the hospital where he received 42 stitches to close the wound. His mom has contacted the company to get a refund from SharkBanz.
The IBTimes contacted SharkBanz co-founder Nathan Garrison who insists that the product is still effective against shark attacks and the incident with Davis was unique.
"What happened here is essentially the rarest of shark encounters, where Zack jumped off his board and pretty much landed on the shark,” Garrison told IBTimes. “If anything it probably helped clear the shark out of the area quicker.”
