Oakley to sponsor the Australian Boardriders Battle

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 August, 2014 -  Surfing Australia welcomes Oakley as the official surf eyewear and apparel sponsor of the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle.  The Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle is the biggest grassroots, boardriders event in Australia. Beginning in October, it involves more than 100 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs across eight State qualifying rounds, culminating in a two-day National Final for 20 clubs on the 2015 Australia Day Long Weekend at Cronulla in Sydney.

The series has $120,000 in prize money including $87,000 for the national final. The Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle also includes a Monster Raffle with a $60,000 prize pool, including an Oakley Pack as one of the prizes. Proceeds from the Monster Raffle will be returned to the Australian boardriders community.

“Oakley is excited to partner with Surfing Australia and develop the grassroots national boardriders club series,” said Oakley Marketing Director Ben Goss. “It gives us a great opportunity to connect with the surf communities throughout Australia and recognise the passion these boardriders clubs have for local surfing.”

Seven-time World Champion, Oakley athlete and Surfing Australia Board Member Layne Beachley said the event had become one of her favourites to compete in after representing Queenscliff Boardriders at the inaugural Australian Boardriders Battle.

“The Australian Boardriders Battle is a fundamental program for Surfing Australia, enabling us to fulfil our role and ambition to provide exciting, inclusive and impactful events and programs that present developmental pathways for future aspiring world champions,” Beachley said. “As a competitor I am excited to be a part of the club surfing scene that originally provided me with a supportive platform and nurturing environment to hone my competitive skills before embarking on the Pro Tour. This is one of the greatest events I have ever competed in.”

Adding to the partnership will be an Oakley eyewear stand at Surfing Australia’s High Performance Centre (HPC) offering HPC participants the very latest in Oakley eyewear. All the HPC coaching staff will also be decked out in the latest Oakley eyewear.

Situated at Casuarina in northern New South Wales, the HPC is the world's first facility dedicated to helping surfers reach a higher performance level so they enjoy the full experience of surfing.

“It is incredibly important for Surfing Australia to have an iconic global surf brand as a major partner on our national club series,” said Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark. “Oakley has a rich history in surf and is a perfect fit partner for the national club program and also as an eyewear partner at the HPC.

“Oakley has been a consistent supporter of grassroots surfing for many years now and this new partnership cements their commitment and link to grassroots surfing in Australia. We genuinely appreciate the support and look forward to a fantastic partnership into the future.”
