Surfing GB affiliated clubs offering new structure
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 August, 2013 : - - The Surfing GB Junior Surfing Scheme (JSS) is being rolled out across the nation. Surfing GB affiliated surf clubs and surf schools are now offering junior surfers an exciting pathway for progression of surfing in the UK.
Surfing GB have teamed up with Calypso Soft Drinks to provide anyone between the ages of 7 and 17 years old with this exciting resource, whether for the novice, or more experienced surfer, the Junior Surfer Scheme offers rewards for hard work and commitment to Surfing.
The JSS is made up of 5 competency levels. Each level will assess knowledge of surfing fundamentals, skills in the water, freestyle ability and surf safety. Participants can enter at any level, they will just need to be assessed to see where they sit on the scale and ensure they are a member of Surfing GB.
"The scheme allows for structured participation in Surfing and we hope its versatility and simplistic structure will allow its use in a variety of areas from surf clubs to educational establishments," says Huw Evans from Calypso. Calypso Aquajuice Juicy Water is the proud sponsor of Surfing GB.
To get involved, those interested need to find their nearest Surfing GB surf school or affiliated surf club. An approved coach will guide them through each level and keep track of their progress in a log book.
An approved school or affiliated club has to be registered with Surfing GB and will be inspected for its standard of instruction, safety, equipment and facilities. It also means that its coaches are Surfing GB qualified so are able to coach the sport effectively, with a positive attitude and in a safe manner.
During coaching sessions coaches will update the Junior Surfers Log Book. To complete a level surfers must show the coach that they can competently perform all of the tasks required. Successful participants will receive a letter of congratulations, certificate of achievement, free posters of Surfing GB athletes, and a free board sticker that shows their level of achievement.
President of Surfing GB and former British and European champion, Nigel Semmens says; "We hope that the Junior Surfing Scheme will really encourage surfers of any ability to join in and see what they can achieve. We have some great surfing talent out there and we feel that this structured approach will help them improve and progress?.
In order to take part in the scheme, participants should be able to swim 50 metres in a pool and must be a member of Surfing GB.
