Contiki presents Surfrider Foundation Beach Cleanup Tour
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 December, 2014 - Surfrider Foundation Northern Beaches Branch and Contiki have teamed up to bring a beach cleanup tour to Sydney’s Northern Beaches from Palm Beach to Manly in an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of single use plastics on our marine environments as part of it’s national Rise Above Plastics campaign.
The first beach cleanup will be held with Contiki staff on Ocean Care Day this Sunday 7th December 10:30am at Manly Beach including a presentation from Barton Lynch, 1998 Billabong Pro and World Title winner.
Each cleanup event is open to the public and will include information on the dangers of single use plastics to our marine environment and the submission of debris data to Tangaroa Blue’s Australian Marine Debris Initiative.
Surfrider Foundation Operations Manager, Jessica Hensman, said today: “Beach cleanups are an important part of introducing and involving the community in this serious problem facing our oceans. Plastic pollution is now said to account for almost 90% of all floating material in our oceans, and with our ever increasing desire for single use plastic throw away items the problem is only getting worse.’
According to the recently reestablished Plastic Bag Free NSW (PBFNSW) campaign, an effort to lobby the NSW Government for a ban on ultra-thin plastic bags in the State, Australians use more than 4,000,000,000 plastic checkout-style bags per year and these plastic bag’s are directly responsible for killing tens of thousands of birds, whales, seals and turtles every year.
Contiki Managing Director, Katrina Barry, said ‘With over 52 years’ experience helping Australian travellers create memories around the world, Contiki is very proud to be contributing to such a worthwhile cause here in our own backyard.
‘Surfrider is an incredible organization that has been protecting Australia’s coastlines for over 23 years. Ocean conservation is core to Contiki’s sustainability program, Contiki Cares, making this partnership the perfect fit. Our team are very much looking forward to kicking off the beach cleanup tour this Sunday in Manly.’
Surfrider believes simple local actions can help make an impact to solve this global issue and that few people use or enjoy the ocean as much as surfers, and few people are in a better position to take a leadership role in protecting it and keeping it clean.
