Tanner Gudauskas finishes strong at Lusiaves Figueira Pro in Figueira da Foz

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 September, 2010 : - - Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 22, finished equal 3rd at the ASP 6-Star Lusiaves Figueira Pro in Figueira da Foz, Portugal, moving the gifted goofy-footer to No. 46 on the ASP World Ranking. Gudauskas, who fell painfully short of requalification for the remaining five events on the ASP Dream Tour after the midyear cut, will look to climb back to the elite ranks via the ASP PRIME and Star series.

The young San Clemente talent proved to be the form surfer of the ASP 6-Star event, consistently igniting the punchy Portuguese beachbreak conditions with a combination of progressive maneuvers and powerful rail-carves to accumulate the three highest heat totals of the event, but was unable to find the scores needed to surpass Yadin Nicol (AUS), 24, in a wave-starved Semifinal heat and finished equal 3rd overall.

“It has been a fun event and just that last heat was a tough one,” Gudauskas said. “I just wanted to surf and I didn’t get too many opportunities to do more than one hit out there so I am a little twisted about that. Good on Yadin (Nicol), he found two good waves on that one so to lose I don’t feel that bad. I love surfing at beach breaks like this and I wish there had of been just one more heat so it is a bitter sweet feeling right now.”

Gudauskas’ path to the Semifinals was not easily earned, taking out heat victories over former ASP World Tour surfers Tim Boal (FRA), 27, Royden Bryson (ZAF), 27, and reigning ASP World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot (FRA), 18, before falling to Nicol.

“That was the most exciting heat I’ve had so far definitely in a long time,” Gudauskas said. “I think at one point of the heat all three of us had been in the lead so it was a see-saw battle. It’s a bummer for Maxime (Huscenot), we’ve all been there in one of those heats where you get a big total and then the other guys get the rhythm. It was a fun heat and I am stoked to make it but I feel bad for Maxime.”

Austin Ware (Solana Beach, CA), 29, also put in a valiant effort at the Lusiaves Figueira Pro, marching through the early rounds before falling to No. 24, Wiggoly Dantas (BRA), 20, in Round 5 to take a 9th place finish.

“I took the opportunity to move to a different break, to adapt, set a strategy and it seemed like it paid off because I started to build a rhythm every wave I caught,” Ware said. “By the end I was finding my way through the break pretty well. I feel like I have some confidence and some good strategy. One of my good friends and travel mate, Tannner (Gudauskas) is bringing the froth and it is making me more excited so I love it.”
Ware is now rated No. 75 on the ASP Men’s World Ranking. Surfers looking to climb on to the ASP World Tour will continue their quest at the ASP 6-Star Super Surf International in Florianopolis, Brazil, running from September 28 through October 3, 2010.
