Team Australia get medals at ISA World SUP/Paddleboard champs

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 May, 2014 - The Gold Coast’s Jackson Close won the silver medal and Shakira Westdorp bronze at the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship in Nicaragua.

The event has attracted more than 250 of the world’s best SUP and paddleboarders from 28 countries. The surfing competition was held at La Boquita and the upcoming paddleboard racing will be held on Lake Nicaragua.

In a challenging 2-3ft swell Close survived three heats before qualifying for the final. He opened with an 8.17, but Tahitian Poenaki Raioha responded with two solid scores for a 17.50 to dominate the final.

Close (14.17) couldn’t find the back-up score to pass Raioha, but his 8.17 was enough to edge ahead of Frenchman Antonine Delpero who also finished on 14.17 with a highest wave score of 7.27. Sean Poynter from the USA was third with 11.07.

Westdorp also survived three heats before reaching the final but struggled to find the form from earlier in the day. She took the bronze with 9.23 behind the USA’s Emmy Merrill (13.50) and France’s Caroline Angibaud (9.27). In a busy week for Westdorp, she now backs-up to compete in the SUP technical race and marathon.

Beau Nixon (Gold Coast) was also looking to qualify for the men’s final, but after winning his first heat of the day finished third in his second heat to be eliminated.

Heading into the racing divisions at Lake Nicaragua, Travelsim Team Australia is in second place in the teams’ event on 3430 points behind France (3500) and ahead of USA (3290), Brazil (2886) and Tahiti (2780).

Surfing Australia would like to recognise the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), Travelsim and Be the Influence - Tackling Binge Drinking for their continuing support of the Team Australia Program.
