Rapid Securities SurfAid Cup Gold Coast crowns champions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 November, 2017 - The clouds parted for the first time in over a week, shining down on another first: the inaugural Rapid Securities SurfAid Cup Gold Coast. SurfAid CEO Andrew Judge remarked “The whole SurfAid team is excited to bring this popular international event series to the Gold Coast for the first time ever. Fantastic fundraising efforts from our 10 participating teams raised over $37,000 for SurfAid’s clean water & sanitation, basic health care, and nutrition projects in remote Indonesian communities – a great result.”

The all-important fundraising race was tight at the top, with the Teams from Plenary, Komune and our afterparty sponsor Balter Brewing, each surpassing their $5,000 targets. Plenary went into the event as Champion fundraisers, earning them the coveted first pick of an incredible lineup of pro surfers who donated their time to support SurfAid. They selected 12x WCT event winner and Pipe Master Taj Burrow, to surf as their pro and lend his 19 years of WCT experience to their team.
The other participating Teams in the event were naming sponsor Rapid Securities, Ray White, Firewire, ALSA Surfing Lawyers, Vissla, Surfing Queensland, and Surfing Chefs.

Other pro surfers who donated their time to surf in the event included: Ricardo Christie, Nathan Cook, Liam O’Brien, Pacha Light, Dylan Longbottom, Dean ‘Turbo’ Bevan, Justin Holland, Yani Light, Summa Longbottom and Dakoda Walters.

Good natured competition shone throughout the day, with surfers who’d never been in a comp before, sharing the lineup with seasoned campaigners of the WSL and WQS. Taj Burrow posted a series of big scores taking Plenary’s Semi Final down to the wire, but they narrowly missed out on a Finals berth by less than a point.

Balter, Ray White, Komune and ALSA Surfing Lawyers all lit up the 4 foot faces on offer in the Final, matching the sunlight glinting off the silverware that was up for grabs. The battle to take home the Gold Coast’s first SurfAid Cup was hard fought, but the Team from Ray White emerged victorious. They all surfed well, but were quick to acknowledge the role played by their pro, young local Billabong teamrider Liam O’Brien.

The Rapid Securities SurfAid Cup Gold Coast completed the 2017 international SurfAid Cup Series, which currently runs in 7 beaches across Australia and the US. The fundraising efforts of the generous surfing community on the Gold Coast builds on all the efforts of the international SurfAid Cup community who surf and save lives. Since 2011 the series has raised over $3million in support of SurfAid, making an enormous difference to the communities with whom we work in Indonesia.

Thank you to everyone who came together to bring the SurfAid Cup to the Gold Coast: our naming sponsor Rapid Securities, our Afterparty sponsor Balter Brewing, and our major supporters Firewire, Billabong, Kudosurf, Sticky Bumps, Ghost Racks, Surfing World and Coastalwatch, and our event hosts Surfing Queensland. Thanks to the Kitchen Garden food truck for feeding us and to Let’s Get Roasted for keeping us caffeinated.
